In a recent interview, Marvel Comic’s VP of Sales, David Gabriel, blamed the company’s lagging sales on diversity saying their fans were essentially rejecting female and diverse characters. Mr. Gabriel subsequently recanted his comments and reaffirmed Marvel’s commitment to diversity. The original comment justifiably stirred up some controversy and was contrary to a recent study from CAA that concluded movies with diverse casts performed better in the box office. Next month, Marvel Studios launches a new series on Hulu called The Runaways about a group of kids who find out their parents are superhero villains, and it features a diverse young cast of emerging stars. NAHREP Director David Acosta’s eldest daughter, Allegra, plays one of the lead charters. On the heels of Wonder Woman’s mega success, I’m predicting that The Runaways will be a smash hit for Hulu and Marvel.
